What to Expect

The King’s Pool, nestled within the vast expanse of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, is a sanctuary teeming with a rich tapestry of wildlife species. While the reserve boasts an impressive array of fauna, it is particularly renowned for harboring one of the largest free-ranging elephant populations, which congregate in remarkable numbers during the arid winter months. Alongside these majestic creatures, a diverse cast of characters roams the landscape, including impala, lechwe, kudu, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, and bushbuck. The presence of formidable predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, and spotted hyenas completes the intricate ecosystem.

Within this haven of biodiversity, rare and elusive species like the sable and roan antelope emerge from the woodlands, adding a touch of exclusivity to the wildlife encounters during the dry season. Bird enthusiasts will be captivated by the awe-inspiring avian diversity, as the reserve offers a spectacular birding experience.

Beyond its role in wildlife conservation, the King’s Pool camp serves a higher purpose: safeguarding a crucial piece of land within the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation area. By ensuring the protection and preservation of this landscape, the camp plays a pivotal role in facilitating the dispersal of elephants and African wild dogs, as well as safeguarding the survival of threatened species like the roan and sable antelope. As a true wilderness area, it stands as a testament to the commitment to biodiversity conservation in the region, fulfilling an essential role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

Highlights

Accommodation

Special care has been taken to balance privacy, safety and comfort whilst still inviting the outside in, to create a signature immersive Wilderness experience. In keeping with our commitment to driving sustainable ecotourism and operating with a light eco-footprint, the refurbished camp in 2019 reused or retained much of the existing material from the previous camp – the superstructure, thatch roof, carved front doors and salvaged timber doors.

The ancient Batswana craft of weaving is expressed in a number of architectural details and this theme has been carried throughout the interiors with abstract embroidery images, and hand painted basket murals. Earthy, rough textures are punctuated by warm copper – in handles and other details – adding richness and depth to the architectural mood. Accents of teal are used throughout to enhance the neutral bronze and copper colour palette.

Game Drives

Embarking on a game drive in the captivating Linyanti is an unforgettable experience that immerses you in Botswana’s remarkable wildlife. Traversing varied woodlands and ancient floodplains along the Linyanti fault line, you become part of a grand narrative, connecting with the essence of this awe-inspiring region.

Yet, it is during the mesmerizing night drives that the Linyanti unveils its hidden treasures. As darkness falls, a new cast of characters emerges, including elusive genets, mysterious civets, and charming bush babies, adding an air of intrigue to your journey.

The night drives also offer thrilling encounters with the feline royalty at their most active. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs roam the darkness, their senses heightened, creating captivating sightings that leave a lasting impression.

A safari in Africa is a transformative pilgrimage, where you connect with the extraordinary. In the Linyanti, every moment holds the promise of discovery, every encounter showcases nature’s resilience. It is a timeless story that unfolds, engraving the enchantment of the African wilderness deep within your soul.

Birding

Birding enthusiasts are in for a treat when they visit Wilderness King’s Pool in the magnificent Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. This renowned reserve is not only a haven for iconic African wildlife but also an internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA). The diversity of bird species found here is truly outstanding, captivating both amateur birdwatchers and seasoned ornithologists alike.

The Linyanti Wildlife Reserve boasts a remarkable array of avian wonders, with a particular emphasis on birds of prey. Among them, the majestic Dickinson’s kestrel soars through the skies, showcasing its impressive hunting skills. The reserve is also a haven for water birds, from the regal fish eagles to graceful herons that elegantly wade in the tranquil waters. Keep your eyes peeled for the distinctive African skimmers, known for their unique feeding technique as they skim the water’s surface in search of prey.

During the summer months, a vibrant spectacle unfolds near camp as southern carmine bee-eaters create their nesting colonies. These exquisite birds, adorned with vibrant plumage, provide a mesmerizing sight as they engage in intricate mating displays and nurture their young. Witnessing these colorful gatherings is a true delight and a testament to the biodiversity that thrives in the Linyanti.

For avid birdwatchers, Wilderness King’s Pool offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe and appreciate the rich avifauna of the region. Make sure to have your binoculars at the ready as you explore the reserve, for every turn of the trail may unveil a new feathered marvel.
