Kalahari Plains Camp
Submerge yourself in the perfectly situated Kalahari Plains Camp in Botswana and relax!
Kalahari Plains Camp is set in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in the country and one of the largest in the world. Its star attractions include the legendary Kalahari black-maned lion as well as some of the world’s best cheetah viewing.
Kalahari Plains Camp is perfectly situated overlooking an immense pan with endless horizons and beautiful skies. It comprises eight en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each from which to enjoy moonlit or star-studded nights. The main area consists of a lounge and dining area with a swimming pool and deck. Solar power provides all the electricity and hot water in the camp and insulated canvas walls and roof keep temperatures inside the units comfortable.
Unusual luxury tents provide a comfortable retreat after each day’s adventure. Each en-suite tent is raised off the ground to catch the natural breezes that keep out the heat of the day.
The bedroom leads onto a small deck and a flight of stairs leads to a second, rooftop deck with never-ending views of the spell-binding Kalahari landscape. A night spent on your rooftop deck under a blanket of a million stars is an unforgettable experience.
Things to Do
Twice daily game drives or full-day excursions take place in open 4×4 vehicles and directed towards the seasonal movements of the wildlife. As we are in a National Park, we adhere to the regulations of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks restricting off-road driving and night driving.
Sleep out under the starry skies of the Kalahari and be lulled to sleep by the sounds of Africa on the roof of your unit.
The Kalahari is famous for its clear night skies, and with no light pollution it is the ideal spot from which to view the incredible formations of the stars and planets. Our guides are also known to dabble with astronomy and will take you on a tour through the constellations.
Wildlife at Kalahari Plains Camp
Healthy wildlife populations are present in the area all year round, but with the advent of the summer rains, the desert comes to life. A plethora of plains game such as springbok and gemsbok converge in their hundreds to graze, followed by lion, one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa and leopard. In winter, the Kalahari is a typical desert. General game is still easily seen, from the carnivores to wildebeest, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as small predators like black-backed jackal, Cape fox, honey badger and myriad mongoose species. Some 220 bird species have been recorded.

“Tented luxury in the heart of the Kalahari. Mama Bee and her team look after all your needs. Great game viewing and guides who were outstanding. Awesome food and magical sunsets. A birding paradise for all.” – sunnySA-7
“This place has true African magic. Not for the faint hearted. It’s true Africa and extremely hot with no real air-conditioning. 47 degrees Celsius. The game viewing is subliminal. The guide has really great knowledge and you will experience Africa in a true sense. Great staff and lovely meals.” – AnnieAllYearTravels
“My wife and I have just spent three nights in the Kalahari Plains Camp and we have been given the most wonderful time. Everything was done with the aim to please us. As has been mentioned in other reviews, it is run and maintained totally by Botswana nationals, and how much we loved them all.” – Geoff G
