CENTRAL KALAHARI GAME RESERVE

Adventurous travelers seeking a truly remote African safari will be thrilled to discover that such a thing still exists. As the second largest game reserve in the world and one of the least visited, nothing can prepare you for the sheer wonder of exploring this vast reserve with its wild, untouched beauty. The landscape is dominated by sand veldt, acacias, and Kalahari apple leaf, interspersed with grasslands, and dotted with occasional sand dunes, pans and fossil river valleys. While the reserve is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, there is one animal that is rather obviously absent, the human being. It is this lack of human traffic, combined with the park’s lack of infrastructure, that makes for a challenging and marvelously authentic African experience. Visitors need to be entirely self-sufficient but those willing to make the effort will be richly rewarded.

OKAVANGO DELTA

Lying in the middle of the largest expanse of sand on earth the Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most amazing, sensitive and complex environments supporting a spectacle of wilderness and wildlife. Unique as one of the world’s few inland deltas, the placid waters and lush indigenous forests offer a safe haven for innumerable bird and wildlife species. The Okavango Delta offers a number of activities for the visitor; game viewing, birding and fishing are all on offer. One can experience this magical world of islands and waterways from land, air and water.

Highlights include the elusive Sitatunga antelope which has found refuge in this pristine wetland ecosystem, while birds such as the African fish eagle, Pel’s fishing owl and many others provide a spectacular display.

LINYANTI CONCESSION

The Kwando-Linyanti river system is home to a series of private game reserves, known for their exotic animal species and luxury safari options. An abundance of wildlife roams freely between the woodland habitats, ancient floodplains and forests that make up these lush, unfenced reserves. The big game in this area increases dramatically during the dry season when the area hosts large herds of impala, blue wildebeest, giraffe and buffalo as well as the world’s highest density of elephant. Several packs of wild dog are found in the area and lion, leopard and cheetah are frequently sighted. Night drives allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.

[us_single_image image=”29706″ size=”full” align=”center”]

Overview

In marked contrast to the Okavango Camps, Kalahari Plains sits on the edge of an immense pan. Large herds of Gemsbok (Oryx) and springbok arrive in the wake of the summer rains, and attract the attention of cheetah and black-maned Kalahari lions. The annual transformations belie a sense of timelessness, and authentic San Bushman cultural experiences give insights into an ancient yet sustainable way of life.

Accommodation

Eight cool canvas guest units (including a family unit) each feature a rooftop sleep-out platform, with unequalled views of the night sky. A refreshing pool and unique architecture make the desert temperatures much more comfortable.

Days 4-7

Vumbura Plains Camp

[us_single_image image=”29708″ size=”full” align=”center”]

Overview

A modern-style safari camp that wouldn’t look out of place in an architecture magazine, Vumbura Plains is designed and operated in total empathy with its diverse surroundings. Partnerships with local communities in this region of the Okavango Delta have created empowerment opportunities while allowing guests access to its many treasures.

Accommodation

Fourteen light, airy guest rooms feature designer fittings and touches of unabashed luxury, including private plunge pools and salas, and indoor and outdoor showers.

Days 8-10

Dumatau Camp

[us_single_image image=”29711″ size=”full” align=”center”]

Overview

DumaTau’ means ‘roar of the lion,’ but it is likely to be the elephants which make the greatest impression here. Its location in the Linyanti and on the banks of Osprey Lagoon position it squarely at the epicenter of Botswana’s elephant herds that are dotted across the northern regions. Other wildlife abounds, and there is a great variety of species to be seen in the contrasting habitats.

Accommodation

Eight twin guest tents and two family tents have views over the lagoon, and the floating sun downer deck symbolizes the light footprint of a camp run solely on solar power.
